Politics and Constitutions in Southeast Asia

Studies patterns of constitutions and politics in Southeast Asia, relating to constitution-making, constitutional change, military influence, human rights, and rule of law. Explicates case studies of constitutional design, such as Thailand’s election system and senate in the 2007 constitution, UN-led constitutionalism in Timor-Leste. Analyzes military-led constitutional reform in Thailand, Myanmar and the Philippines. Mentions politics and human rights issues, including religious minority rights in Indonesia and Malaysia, rule of law and human rights in Vietnam, racial politics in Singapore, court systems in response to constitutional politics, constitutional amendment process in Vietnam, and the Philippines’s public support in mitigating politicization of the judiciary. Looks at rule of law in illiberalism in Cambodia, Singapore, as well as religious freedom in Malaysia.
